Around 50 campaigners, defendants and families gathered outside Wandsworth prison in south London for a “noise protest” against the imprisonment of young people. The protest was in solidarity with all the youths in prison. Some were arrested in connection with the 2010 student protests, others with the summer riots last year.
The English Defence League (EDL) continued their anti-Islam campaign in Leicester on Saturday. Heavy policing facilitated their march through the town centre, with non-white residents and anti-EDL protesters kept away from the far right demonstration. The day was mainly peaceful with a handful of minor clashes between pro- and anti-EDL demonstrators and the police.
Around 60 protesters played music and made noise outside Holloway Women’s Prison in solidarity with imprisoned protesters and rioters. Friends and family members of inmates spoke about the harsh custodial sentences handed to loved ones. Hip Hop artists Ed Greens and Terror Silencer Mc both dedicated a track to the women prisoners. Other speakers included activists from Defend the Right to Protest, the Free Mumia Abu Jamal Campaign, trade unionists, and the Occupy movement. London, 31/12/11
The Libyan uprising against Gaddafi began on 17th Feb 2011. In a nationwide rebellion, many Libyans took up arms and fought in peoples’ militias. Ali swapped his student life in Manchester for a machine gun to join the fight.

Protesters from Squatters Action Group disrupted a TV interview with former chancellor Alistair Darling on College Green and demanded to know whether or not he was backing the ConDem governments proposed criminalisation of squatting.
On the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the extremist islamist group Muslims Against Crusades staged a protest outside the US Embassy and the far right EDL staged a counter protest. There were miner clashes on Edgware road between EDL and MAC members which led to a number of arrests.

London’s annual Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street carnival. This was the first test for the Metropolitan police public order units after rioting rocked English cities.
Clarence Road residents speak about the riots that took place on their street. Church and community groups organise a street party, exactly a week after the the worst civil unrest London has witnessed in 30 years. Clarence Road was a major flash point, with running battles with police, shops looted and cars set on fire.
About 300 right wing nationalist marched thought Brighton town center, they were apposed by United Against Fascism protesters and local anit-Fascists. The day marked the fourth annual event that “March For England” had staged in Brighton. Sussex Police said a counter-protest was held by opposing groups within the city as protesters made their way to Victoria Gardens for speeches. Police said eight people were arrested for public order offices.
London protesters speakout on the French ban on niqab and burqa. Under the law backed by Nicolas Sarkozy, it is illegal for women in full-face veils to go anywhere in public, including walk down the street, enter shops, use public transport, attend doctors’ surgeries or town halls.
